      Premier Darrell Dexter visited Meat Cove on Monday to get a firsthand look at the devastation caused by the August 21st rainstorm.

The first convoy of vehicles made their way over riverbeds and quickly repaired bridges to arrive at the community centre with much fanfare.

On Saturday night/Sunday morning of August 21st-22nd a downpour of rain measuring almost 200 m washed out five bridges, severely damaged roads, swept buildings and cars into the cove and isolated 100 residents and about 30 tourists.

The only way in or out was by boat, and that was an ordeal.

You don’t see any evidence of the severity of the rainstorm until you observe the missing shoulders on the highway at Sugar Camp, and the closer you get to Meat Cove the worse the devastation gets.

The Salmon River bridge was destroyed, which is about five miles from Meat Cove; three other bridges/culverts were washed away; ...
